Sometimes the best part of living in Key West is getting away from Key West.
This weekend, we loaded up the little boat and headed into the backcountry toward Marvin Key. No big plans, no fancy itinerary — just a beautiful day, clear water, and one of those places that reminds you how lucky we are to call the Florida Keys home.

When people think about Key West, they usually picture Duval Street, sunsets at Mallory Square, restaurants, historic homes and all the things happening around Old Town.
And I love all of that.
But after living here for years, some of my favorite days are actually the simplest ones — getting out on the boat, finding a quiet spot in the backcountry, swimming, exploring and spending the day outside.
Marvin Key is one of those places. Depending on the tide and conditions, the water can look almost unreal — clear, shallow and stretching forever.
It’s hard to believe this is basically our backyard.

It might be walking or biking through Old Town in the morning, heading out on the water for the afternoon, catching dinner, watching the sunset, or taking a little boat into the backcountry and finding a place that feels a million miles away.
Days like this are a good reminder of why we chose to make Key West home — and why, after all these years, I still love living here.
